Can A Stroke Occur Due To An Emotional Outburst From Family Member?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: I am feeling horrible and guilty. Can someone cause another person to have a stroke ... Like the, being angry at the person who had the stroke or lifting them up when they refuse to stand?

The person who had the stroke is an 81 female...doctor stated stroke had occurred in the last six months. We did not know it. We moved her and she was fully incontinent. We thought this was her depression and she was being uncooperative. She had urinated on the sofa and on the carpet and refused to get up. Her son asked her to get up and she said no and he went over and stood her up and she was startled. He was upset verbally and put her in the walker chair and roller her to the bathroom where she refused to go to the bathroom. He said some unkind words to her. She did not seen too outwardly care about the words.

A week later she had an issue at the assisted living facility about waking up and they brought her to the hospital where they stated she was having nerorological activity consistent with a stroke and two weeks later she passed.
He son feels guilt and does not know if this contributed. He felt he had to be strong because her diagnosis up until that time was failure to thrive and depression and we found out she was incontinent for two months.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be due to emotional outburst

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
At this elderly age atherosclerosis is a predominant factor for stroke. Also she has features consistent with frontal lobe involvement in the form of incontinence, apathy, behavioural abnormalities and urination at inappropriate places.
Since the onset is gradual possibility of stroke is less likely. Sometimes stroke at sites with no limb weakness may go unnoticed for some time.
Other possibilities may be normal pressure hydrocephalus and fronto temporal dementia.
Stroke due to stress occurs at the time of emotional out burst and is usually hemorrhagic in nature.
Don't feel depressed or guilty as pointing to one particular precipitating event may be not justifiable at this age with multiple risk factors.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Hello dear,
Mri finding of multiple small strokes is also a suggestion of previous events and atherosclerosis related small vessel pathology.
