Do you have to specifically look for it or does it appeared to a trained operator. A further question, a ultrasound would identify constipation but would it confirm bowel obstruction and bowel perforation resulting from Diverticular disease burst diverticula in the sigmoid colon..Sorry about the broadness of the question as i know a CT is better but i am terrified of radiation.
Brief Answer:
It depend on clinical findings and clinician demand.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Calcifications are generally age related findings and it is seen during scanning but proper blood vessels examination need separate study.
If calcifications are causing symptoms and clinician specifically request to comment on degree of obstruction or thrombus then it is reported accordingly in reports.
In Ultrasound, bowel obstruction is identified by distended and fluid filled bowel loops.X-ray of abdomen in erect posture is very helpful in diagnosing bowel obstruction.
Bowel perforation is indicated by peritonitis and fluid in abdominal cavity and it can be seen by ultrasound.

Thank you Doctor...for a patient with a history of Diverticular Disease would a plain abdominal xray confirm diverticulitis since ultrasound is not sensitive...
Brief Answer:
Plain X-ray abdomen is also not very helpful.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Plain X-ray abdomen is not very helpful. It can only indicate if there is any complication like perforation, paralysis, obstruction etc.
Conventionally barium enema is done for diverticular disease.
Now a days, colonoscopy is preferred for direct visualization.CT colonography is done in selected cases.
MRI can also be done, but is limited used due to cost factor.
