Question: Can adderall cause pericarditis? I had covid and then went back to work after quarantine and thought I was alright and this started taking my adderall again took the prescribed amount for a day but developed heart palpitations and pericarditis. Is it safe to ever take adderall again after the pericarditis is gone? I need the medication to function at my normal level given my ADHD but I’m afraid and my doctor said it should be ok once the pericarditis has subsided as it was viral related but I’m scared.

Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that Adderall is not related to pericarditis, as it is not a known adverse effect of this drug.

I think that percarditis is related to Covid infection, which is known to cause such cardiac complication in a considerable percentage of patients.

However, you should know that during pericarditis, the heart is very vulnerable and Adderall may worsen the situation, by causing tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmia and even trigger myocardial ischemia.

For this reason, I would not recommend taking Adderall while suffering from pericarditis.

Anyway, when you will recover completely from pericarditis, it will be OK to start Adderall again.

Hope you will find this information helpful!
