Can Amoxicillin 500 Mg Cause Intermittent Loose Stool / Diarehea?
Question: I am a 47 year old female. I have just completed a five day course of amoxicillin 500 mg three times a day. Five days after last dose (yesterday) I began experiencing intermittent loose stool/diarehea. Could this be related to amoxicillin. I am concerned about c-diff. My question how can I tell the difference between a standard reactio to antibiotics which will clear with time and something more serious such as c-diff. The loose stools are intermittent and this morning my first movement of two was fully formed the second a bit looser.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Amoxicillin most common side effect is loose motions.
To rule out clostridium diff infection you can go for a stool routine test with culture of stools
Start taking any probiotic like VSl #3 two times a day to replenish the good bacteria of gut which are destroyed by Amoxicillin.
Thank you

Thanks for your reply. How long does it typically take for your gut to recover after a round of antibiotics? My stools were a bit firmer this morning. If I was to be infected with c-diff am I to assume that the diarehea would get progressively worse before treatment and not firm stool formation?

Follow up.
Detailed Answer:
Hi ,
I would suggest you to take probiotic for 5 days initially with soft diet and yoghurt.
After that if things don't improve we would move for stool culture etc.
Thanks
