Can An Intramuscular Solution Of Vitamin B12 Be Administered Subcutaneously?

Question: Can an intramuscular solution of vitamin b12 be administered subcutaneously? Thanks
Brief Answer:
It can be administered subcutaneously
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. Vitamin B12 can either be injected intramuscularly or subcutaneously, but if it is injected subcutaneously, it is stated that it should be deep into the subcutaneous tissue, in order to make sure it absorbs adequately.
I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

I do have psychiatric issues and fatigue that is caused by b12 deficiency. Research shows even if your level is in range, there still could be hidden deficiency and b12 will help. It's 1mg per vial. Thanks
Brief Answer:
Good quality research has not shown benefit
Detailed Answer:
Actually, there is no good data to support the idea of giving Vitamin B12 without documented deficiency, so I would not recommend giving vitamin B12 supplements without deficiency. If you want to anyways, it would be hard to say how much you should give; maintenance doses are sometimes given every 1-3 months, so I would suggest every 3 months. Fortunately, as a water soluble vitamin, there are no known dangers of taking too much, as your body will get rid of any excess vitamin through your urine.
Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can.
