Can Babies Get Hypothyroidism Or Thyroiditis From Mother?
Question: Hello,
I have twin girls (6.5months, 7.26kg, 7.25kg each, birth weight 2.3, 2.4kg).My wife's TSH level is more than 100microU/ml (done on 27th March 2014). I have consulted a Physician friend of mine who said that it could be postpartum thyroiditis resulting from TPO antibodies. He said similar antibodies could also be present in babies for first few months. My question is that, can these antibodies cause hypothyroidism in babies? if so, should we check for TPO antibodies in them and treat accordingly. If there are no TPO anitbodies in babies, can they still get hypothyroidism/thyroiditis from mother? As such their milestones seem to be on time and weight is also good, there seems to be no sign of hypothyroidism in babies. Please suggest what to do next.
Brief Answer:
Test the babies for TSH and FT4.
Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, hi! as far as your wife is concerned, you need to treat her with thyroxine replacement for some time till she is maintaining normal balance for at least a year then you repeat TPO antibodies. if they are also normal then you can try discontinuing the thyroxine and see if she maintains without thyroxine replacement.
for the two babies, testing antibodies is not of much significance. test them for TSH and FT4 and let me know the results. they can be hypothyroid due to maternal antibodies but then in that case they need to be treated. regards!
