Can Bowed Legs Be Rectified During Middle Age?

default
Posted on Fri, 26 Jun 2015
Question: Hi, I am soon to be 55 years old. I have bow legs. At school I was taunted. I came home from school and would sit in my bedroom and tie my legs together. I only wear trousers, jeans or long dresses and if the wind blows I am conscious as I feel people can see the horrible shape of my legs. I wondered if anything could be done to straighten my legs, I could then wear leggings and dresses that are not to the ground. I just wondered what treatment is available and how much it would cost. Thank you. My email address is YYYY@YYYY . I trust this is totally confidential as I have never spoke to anyone about this.

Brief Answer:
At this age, the risk are more than the benefits!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these bowl legs and all the stigma this has caused you. I feel your pain. It must be difficult walking around being so scared that persons may notice the shape of your legs and make a mockery of it. Am so sorry about this.

Bow legs are typically corrected in childhood through surgical means when the bones are still somewhat soft and can be forced into desired directions. At this age also, the weight is not so much of a problem and bone injuries can be easily repaired. At this age, doing so is a very huge risk with results that no one can totally bet on that they would necessarily make your bow legs significantly better.

In all, the risk are really more than the possible benefits. However, see a local orthopedic surgeon for examination. Also, you can upload an image right here for me to appreciate and see to what extend we can hope to get encouraging results from here. All we do here is totally confidential.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thank you for your advice. I do work in a hospital in Surrey for ophthalmologists for 16 years mainly but also T&O orthopaedic surgeons. Just embarrassed. Did see on utube, I think man was 62 years old and resolved. Still think I could be helped.

Brief Answer:
You could be helped..Yes but chances are very low!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

It is true that you could benefit from surgery. However, the success rate is very low and would not be comparable to same results in children. Unfortunately, this is not commonly done in adults and I cannot give you figure on the success rates in adults.

In all, you can take the risk but I honestly think it is so great for the probability of success at this time.

I Wish you well.

Did you have a look on utube regarding the 62 year old man who had the problem rectified?

Brief Answer:
Can you send the link to me?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Please, send the link to me. My response is not based on youtube but from scientific reviews and writings. Youtube would show a single case and would never say a thing about the many others who never received any improvement. Like I mentioned, a few would benefit. However, I am happy to look at the link and make comments if you send it to me.

Thanks.
