Can Celiac Disease Have An Effect On The HIDA Scan Result?
Question: If you have a HIDAscan result of EF 14%, and you have recently been diagnosed as celiac, can the hidascan result be a false-positive? I recently learned I have celiac disease, and my hidascan showed EF of 14%. They are recommending gallbladder removal but I am nervous that it won't solve issues because of the celiac disease. Am I wrong to think the celiac could lead to a false positive result on the HIDA scan?
Brief Answer:
Celiac disease can affect EF
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
Celiac disease is associated with decreased cholecystokinin secretion. Cholecystokinin is needed for emptying of gallbladder. So in celiac disease in which the cholecystokinin secretion is low, the emptying of gallbladder is affected. This is reflected by a low EF in HIDA scan.
I would advise you to strictly follow a gluten free diet which will improve the EF and there will not any need to remove the gallbladder.

Dr.R.K.
