Can Diverticulitis Cause Severe Pain In Lower Abdomen?
Question: Last year I had an abdominal abscess which required a trip to the hospital for 4 days. It started with a dull ache in the lower abdomen on the right side. Then a low grade fever came on. A heavy dose of antibiotics solved the problem but no one ever said how or why it happened. A recent colonoscopy indicated extensive diverticulosis so I wonder if that could be the cause. I am beginning to have a ache again in the same part of my lower abdomen so I am worried and wonder if I should start taking antibiotics again.
Brief Answer:
Yes, diverticulitis is the most probable reason.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thank you for the query.
Yes, definitely diverticulitis and diverticle perforation is the most common reason of abdominal abscess at your age. No doubt in that.
If you start having similar pain than the last time, and you have fever or feel kind of sick, antibiotic should be prescribed. It should be regular antibiotic (like Ciprofloxacine and Metronidazole) AND you should have a week course of Rifaximine. Soft diet is also advisable in case of inflammation.
Once the inflammation is gone, you should add fiber and probiotic to your diet.
Hope this should help.
Regards.
