Can Dry Cough And Cold In A Breastfeeding Mother Be Treated Safely?
I would suggest ginger tea and cetrizine
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
There can be some cold and cough during pregnancy and lactation period. It doesnot affect the baby. Dry cough and some mucous can be due to recovering of a bad cold. It does require much treatment and gets better in a few weeks.
You have been prescribed correct medicines but there could be some side effects of antibiotic Cefolac. So keep this medicine to the minimum required.
My suggestions will be as follows:
- Drink warm fluids and ginger tea
- Probiotic XXXXXXX and pour it in mouth, once a day for 3 days.
- Piritone CS syrup when cough and mucous is bad (in place of lecope)
Mostly your own immunity will help recover, so exercise regularly and take a hearty, hygienic, nutritious diet. If chest congestion is getting bad then a chest X ray PA view is required. During lactation, we should also watch out for nutritional deficiencies with basic blood tests.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I assist you further.

It is safe during lactation
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Probiotic packet e.g Bifilac or Vibact packet are safe for mother and baby. It helps in normalising normal flora.
Piritone CS has contents that maynot be given to babies. But if taken by lactating mother in minimal amounts are safe. So you can take half teaspoon before sleeping for 2-3 days or when really needed for a bad cough and mucous.
