Question: Hello Doctor, my son is 10.6 years old weight 44 kgs. Has 102.6 temperature and is shivering. I had given him paracetamol but fever is coming within 2-3 hrs of giving the dose. I just gave Meftal P suspension 7.5 ml after 5 hrs of paracetamol after sponging him. Kindly let me know when fever comes back next do I give paracetamol or meftal p only? I also have meftal dt tablet. Which is better for him for the next dose.

Brief Answer:
Need not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If no other symptoms apart from fever, we need not worry- this might be a viral illness. It should subside in 2-3 days.

You can give him Paracetamol 4 times daily(every 6 hours). Give Mefenamic acid(meftal) only if fever persists after 1 hour of Paracetamol and sponging does not work. NSAIDs(meftal) are better avoided if possible.

For his weight, dose of paracetamol will be 500mg, and Meftal will be 250mg.
Keep 6 hours between 2 paracetamol doses and 8 hours for Meftal

If fever doses not disappear by 3-4 days or if additional symptoms appear, we can evaluate further.

I hope this answer will help
Thank you.
