Can Gonorrhea Or Chlamydia Contracted Through Unprotected Sex Be Transmitted To Other Partners Sexually?

I have also had unprotected vaginal and oral sex with my girlfriend. Now my girlfriend is sick with a normal headache and cough. She has also complained of having the chills and pain in her lower back. She went to the doctor and the doctor told her that the symptoms sounded consistent with Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and that is usually caused by gonorrhea or Chlamydia. Not knowing my history, my girlfriend doubted that diagnosis and the doctor did not test her. He did prescribe her Ciprofloxacin antibiotic though.
This was cause for alarm for me. Could I be infected and passed it to her? What are the chances based on my exposure? Can her PID be caused by something else or misdiagnosed? Will the ciprofloxacin cure either of these potential STDs?
I have already gone to the clinic to get tested/treated (just in case) and am awaiting the results but I'm making myself feel sick over this because I don't want to have to have this conversation with my girlfriend. I'm hoping that my results are negative and/or that the meds shes on now will cure her as well.
Many things might explain this..Please Follow through!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
1. With unprotected sexual encounters, there is always a chance of catching an STD. Unfortunately, some like chlamydia can remain silent and allow you to pass it on to others without realizing it. This is a possible scenario.
2. It could be that your girlfriend has another infection such as urinary tract infection and not necessarily a PID. I will, however, advocate for comprehensive evaluation and management. No matter what the final findings are, I think her health and recovery means more than anything you might be afraid to talk with her.
3. I am happy to hear you have gotten tested. No matter the outcome of the tests, encourage her to get fully evaluated herself. This will help address any potential disease condition that might be available and allowed to go on and cause further damage.
4. Ciprofloxacin is not adequate in treating PID and many other STDs.
In all, face the current health problem and allow for comprehensive evaluation and treatment. No matter the end result, her health is what matters most and other issues would be sorted out.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. As always, I'm available for further exchanges if need be.

I agree that my girlfriends health is most important. I am still waiting for the results of my test which should be ready today or tomorrow. My paranoia has me very stressed in the mean time.
I was looking for more information on the odds that the test is positive vs. negative.
I'm very paranoid and may be over reacting. It's easy to read about symptoms online and self diagnose incorrectly.
From what I've read online I also think the odds of me being infected is pretty low.
Besides my girlfriend, who I know is not infected (unless from me), I have had protected vaginal and anal sex. I have also had unprotected oral sex. I've gone through the odds in my head and they seem low.
First I don't know if the escorts are infected or not, but I imagine that percentage is less then 25%. Then I believe the protected vaginal and anal sex carries a low risk of infection lets say 15% chance of infection? I also believe that unprotected oral sex carries low risk for gonnorhea or clymedia which could cause PID in my girlfriend.
Keep in mind that I showed no symptoms.
The only reason for my concern is that my girlfriends doctor mentioned that her symptoms were consistent with PID which he said is usually caused by gonnorhea or clymedia. Her doctor took a urine test and ruled out pregnancy. He also ruled out the flu.
Her symptoms are lower back pain, pain in the ovaries, fever, chills and she has had a stuffy nose and cough and she has complained of having a migraine. I don't think that the stuffy nose and cough are related because there are children (who would not have an STD) in her household that also have those symptoms.
I believe the lower back pain and pain in the ovaries could be caused by something else other that an STD or PID? Like you mentioned a UTI. She also mentioned before that she was told she had a cyst on her ovaries, so I don't know if that would be the cause?
Would ciprofloxacin cure a UTI?
At first my paranoia had me thinking that I was more than likely infected, however after the research I've done I'm feeling like maybe I'm just paranoid and my chances of being infected are pretty low as I've practiced pretty safe sex and was not showing any symptoms. It's very possible that my girlfriend does not have PID but something else actually.
Anyway I was hoping you could let me know your thoughts on my chances of a positive result. I'm thinking there is less than 10% chance my test results are positive. Do you think I'm being too optimistic?
Your chances are for sure minimal!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
1. Your chances are for sure not that high. Having protected intercourse with no incidents means even if they were infected, chances of getting contaminated are minimal.
2. Her symptoms could have many different causes and a PID is just one of them. To me, I would use the opportunity for exhaustive testing to make sure we're not missing out on anything.
3. Yes, Ciprofloxacin is a commonly used and preferred drug for treating UTI. It is very effective at this.
I hope this addresses your worries.
