Can Hiatal Hernia Cause Persistent Cough?
Question: Can a hiatal hernia cause a persistant cough? I have had a cough for 2 months, have been to the VA and had 2 chest xrays (both negative) and a private doctor 3 times. They prescribed antibiotics, had an MRI of my chest (negative) and now on Zpack and prednisone. Still coughing badly. What else could it be?
Brief Answer:
Yes, it can cause.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Hiatal hernia is one of the most common causes of reflux of acid back into esophagus from the stomach. This acid reflux irritates and inflames the larynx and wall of esophagus causing a persistent cough.
Coughing means that there are some irritation and inflammation in the upper throat area (X-rays are clear so it is upper tract inflammation).
Take Rabeprazole and levosulpiride with anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic tablet and you would be fine.
Hope I have answered your query.
