Can High Level Of Homocysteine In Blood Cause Intrauterine Fetal Demise?
Thank you
yes , hyperhomocysteinemia is possible cause for IUFD in your case.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to HCM,
normal homocysteine levels in the blood between 4 and 15 micromoles/liter (µmol/L). aNY LEVELS MORE THAN 15 are considered high.
Hyperhomocysteinemia can cause recurrent pregnancy losses, IUGR and IUFD due to congenital malformations , so this can possibly be the reason of early third trimester foetal loss.
High values of homocysteine may be caused by: Not getting enough folic acid, vitamin B6, or vitamin B12 in your diet. Other conditions or diseases, such as homocystinuria, kidney disease, hypothyroidism, Alzheimer's disease, or certain cancers.
This can be treated by folic acid and vitamin B6 and Vitamin b12 supplementation. If in injectable form then INJ. NEUROBION 10mg X once a day x INTRAMUSCULAR x alternate day x 3 doses. you can get it prescribed by your PCP. This shall help reduce homocysteine levels and next pregnancy should be planned only when the levels are controlled for at least 3 months.
Regards
Had checked b12 & folate levels & thyroid levels, renal fuction tests ,they are all within the reference range.Any further tests need to be done to know the cause or can treatment be started
Should this neurobion be taken even though levels are in normal limits & only these 3 doses or it shall be followed by any oral medication & for how long after homocysteine levels are normalized?
Thank you
rule out thrombophilias as well.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
For homocysteinemia, 3 doses are usually enough. But usually in early third trimester IUFD, acquired thrombophilias should also be ruled out which are usually the most common causes of IUGR AND UNEXPLAINED IUFD.
These include- ACLA, ANA, LAC, PROTEIN C & S DEFICIENCY, FACTOR V LEIDEN MUTATION, ANTITHROMBIN 3 DEFICIENCY, PROTHROMBIN 20210A GENE.
All these need to be checked. So get them screened as well.
