Can Hypothyroidism Cause Weight Gain?
Question: I was going to Dr. Simonds in XXXXXXX NC for weight loss. I lost 62 pounds in one year. It was getting expensive so I had to stop going. He had me on Metformin (3 a day) and Phentermine (one a day) and a B12 shot every 3 weeks. Now that I am not going to him anymore I am no longer able to get the Metformin and the Phentermine. I have gained back 15 pounds and I am struggling with trying to get this back off. I want to know if I can get a RX for these off the internet? Or is there something over the counter that works the same? I do see my thyroid doctor once a year and my regular doctor twice a year. It is not time for me see either. I take a B12 pill that seems to be working. I do not want to put this weight back on. Can you please help?

I get my thyroid checked every year. I just had it checked in XXXXXXX It is normal. I am on armor thyroid. As a kid I had hyperthyroidism but after the birth of my 1st child it went to hypothyroidism. I do not have any problems with my ovaries.
Brief Answer:
Synthyroid replacement is required
Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam
The weight gain in your case is directly created to under functioning thyroid.
Weight gain can sometimes occur, despite normal thyroid study.
Armour thyroid is not effective in maintaining the normal activity of thyroid.
I sincerely advise you to replace it with oral pills of Synthyroid( Levothyroxine) with appropriate dosage according to the latest lab profile of thyroid hormones.
This Synthyroid is effectively known to stimulate the thyroid and prevent weight gain.
Additionally, it's advisable to continue METFORMIN for an effective out come.Phentermine can be stopped.
Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these pills to you.
Post your further questions if any.
Thank you.
