Can I Get Pregnant Despite Having I Pill Post Unprotected Sex?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: I took Primolute N to delay my periods from 1st to 3rd october. However, my original date to get my periods was 7th october, I had symptoms of early periods & I decided to delay them. I had gone for a vacation & happened to jave unprotected sex on 3rd late night. There wasnt a nedical store close by, so I only took an ipill on the afternoon of October 6, still with in the 72 hour period. Now I havent gotten down since then. It's been close to a week since the first dose of primolute. I wanted to ask few things:
A) How many chances that I can be pregnant?
B) How does the two drugs interfere? C) Can my periods be delayed? And when can I expect my periods?
D) will I need to take a pregnancy test? If yes, then which day of the missed cycle?

Brief Answer:
You may not get pregnant but your cycle disturbed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

Primolut -N contain norethisterone and delayed menses by prolonging luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.

The I-pill contains a high dose of progesterone in it and act by delaying ovulation, delayed egg released and interfere with implantation depend upon timing of drug consumption.

Your results are as follows-

1) I-pill is 58% effective if taken 48-72 hrs. Of intercourse, means the chances of pregnancy in your case is 42%.

2) Both the drugs containing progesterone and then they may disturb your menstrual cycle pattern and delayed your menses due to high levels of progesterone that causes hormonal imbalance.

3) Yes! Your period can be delayed. Normally a period (withdrawal bleeding) occurs after 5-7 days of I-pill consumption and 3-4 days after last dose of primolut-N.

In your scenario it is rather difficult to predict that when will you get your period but expect it around 11-13 October.

4) You can go for pregnancy test only when you overdue 7 days from your expected period date that means around 14-15 November.

Hope I have answered your query If you have further questions I will be happy to assist you.

Good luck.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX

Thanks for your response. It is very helpful. & It is nice to have all this cleared.

However, I am still a little concerned about the pregnancy bit. I wanted to understand that since it was the last few days of my cycle and I wasnt at the high of my fertility period, does it still count as a 42% chance with so much drug interference? Please let me know.

Brief Answer:
The chances of pregnancy are less in your case.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,

Nice to hear from you again.

The probabilities of pregnancy is not exactly 42%( This is static rate) in your case because you are not in your most fertile days and you had I-pill within 72hrs. But chances of pregnancy is not 100% rule out in your case.

So please do not worry about that.

Wait and observe for your period.

Good luck.

Hi, just one last clarification. My partner never ejaculated inside me. Are there still considerable chances of pregnancy? Or just about minimal? Please let me know.

I had very bad cramps till about this monday. They have considerably subsided. Accept occasional cramps in abdomen when I laugh or exert pressure on the lower abdomen region. Does this have any significance?

And also, as early as when can I expect signs of pregnancy? If any?

Brief Answer:
Cramps can be a side effect of I-pill.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,

Nice to get word from you all again.

Here is the explanation of your inquiries-

- Without ejaculating semen inside the vagina, the chances of pregnancy are rare.
-The cramps may be due to a side effect of I-pill, it will settle in a few days.
-Pregnancy symptoms (if present) may feel as early as 2-3 weeks after sexual intercourse.

Hope it is useful, feel free to discuss more.
