Question: Hai...

I am a allergic patient, having allergies towards - old dust, paper dust, wheat, garlic and ginger, mosquitoes and cockroach (control mechanisms), euphorbia, pollen, banana, orange and some varieties of fish. This was identified through an allergy test and doctor prescribed for Telekast - L (daily -night) and cosvate ointment for one month. I had the medicine for one month, but still the allergy comes frequently so I have to have telekast. So now which ever day the allergy comes I will have one tablet and use the ointment. Is it Ok to use this medicine like that. Are there any side effects? Is there any other way to control these allergies. Pls guide...

Brief Answer:
Practically harmless

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

When one suffers from allergy because of so many allergens, is it really difficult to avoid the problem altogether.

Oral anti allergic tablets are the drugs most commonly used with sedation being the most common side effect. Still with frequent use, one or the other anti allergic tablet gets selected as the one causing least sedation and can be used.

There are no other significant side effects and even long term use is practically harmless. Only thing is that a regular long term use makes these drugs ineffective and a brake in use needs to be done. That helps in getting the efficacy of these drugs back. So, just use when required.

Other ways are to avoid the exposure which is a very difficult task. Still minimise the exposure to allergens.

Please discus with your doctor about immunotherapy and it can be given a try although the efficacy is dubious.

Feel free to ask another query.

Can you pls give more details about immunotherapy...How is it done? Are there specific places that does this?
I also have darkening of lips..Its very dark as if like a person who smokes (I don't smoke). I do use lips stick, but not often. But even when I dont use it, it keeps on becoming dark. Is this also a kind of allergy? Can it be cured?

Brief Answer:
Injectable for of immunoglobulins

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.

Immunotherapy is usually an injectable form of immunoglobulins given at 2-3 weekly intervals. This may give respite for few months to a year. You need to discuss with your doctor about the prognosis and success of therapy.

Most of dermatologist and ENT do this. You need to find out at your place.

Regarding lip problem, a dermatologist will be better person to advise.
