Can I Use Progesterone Cream Post Complete Hysterectomy?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Jun 2015
Question: I have had a complete hysterectomy RT adenocarcinoma, removal of ovaries included. I am told not to use "hormones". Can I use the OTC progesterone cream I used prior to surgery (Progest) without risking Ca? Will use of progesterone contribute to development of breast cancer? I understand estrogen receptors present on some cancers, but are there progesterone receptors as well that make progesterone dangerous to use? I get conflicting data.

Brief Answer:
Progesterone is a risk factor for developing breast cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I have been through you question and understand your concern.

Progesterone is one of the risk factors to develop breast cancer. This is not necessarily related to your pas medical history.

Studies have shown that using combined hormone therapy (estrogen plus progesteron) after menopause increases the risk of getting breast cancer. It may also increase the chances of dying from breast cancer. The use of estrogen alone after menopause does not appear to increase the risk of developing breast cancer. Thus, progesterone is the main responsible of developing breast cancer.

Other studies regarding injectable form of progesterone (DPMA) have shown increased risk in developing breast cancer.

Basically, I would not recommend using progesterone.

Wish you the best health.
