Can Infections Be Transmitted Through Contaminated Hands?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: Hi doctor,
How are you?
I have a few questions regarding germs.
If someone in the office doesn't wash their hands after the toilet, then touches office objects such as books, staplers, pc etc. what is the likelihood of then transmitting germs to you? Are these germs contagious?
Also if you have dried skin in your pubic hair, is this contagious if it falls on everyday objects? are others likely to get sick?
thank you

See below!
Detailed Answer:
HI and thanks for contacting us at healthcare magic.
1. If someone fails to respect proper hand washing after using the toilet, they carry germs and spread around. They are contagious and can cause an infection to you. The good side is that if you always wash your hands before putting anything into your mouth, then you will eventually wash away all the possible contamination from them and still stay safe. Bottom line, always look after yourself.
2. No, dry skin falling off would not transmit germs. Germs need a cozy environment to be able to thrive. dry/flaky skin will not do that.
I hope this addresses your worries. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Hi Dr Ditah,
Thank you for answering my question so promptly!
I'll try not to worry as much but should I be scared/grossed out about touching objects which that person has contaminated? Will those germs affect me? How long will they live on surfaces?
Just to clarify, dried skin from the pubic hair cannot thrive on plastics, door handles? What about if I leave my laptop on the ground? Is it likely that dried skin from the pubic region can become contagious and full of germs when it has come in contact with the laptop?
Thanks again for your help Dr!

Brief Answer:
Personal hygiene would help you stay free of infection!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
As long as you look after yourself, there is nothing to get worried about. Person might be careless and leave germs on surfaces, as long as you was your hand before putting anything into your mouth, you are safe. Also, germs cannot leave a surface like plastic or your computer and cause harm to you. Your skin is there and does so much protection in that regard. Don't forget the skin itself harbors germs but they are not harmful because they have no way breaching the skin barrier to get into the body and cause harm.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Hi again Dr Ditah,
Just to confirm, dried skin from the pubic hair has no risks essentially because it's 'dead' skin even though it came from the genital region?
Would touching dried skin from this region be the same as touching genitals? Which harbours more germs?
What about when you shop? If someone were not to wash their hands and serve you after coming from the toilet and touch dried skin from the pubic region, what are the risks for you as a customer? Will you carry these infectious germs and spread it around? How likely will these germs be transferred to objects such as cereal boxes, exercise books etc?
Thanks for your help as always!!

Brief Answer:
Most impotrtant thing, wash your hands before eating!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
We cannot always control how others behave. However, I greet everyone, touch everything I need to touch, sit wherever I must and at the end of the day, I make sure i wash my hands adequately so that I do not ingest any germs from anyone else.
dry skin Pubic area, dry or not in no way constitutes an increased medium for germs. There is no need for any extra precaution.
In all, good self hygiene is what matters most!

Hi Dr,
Just to confirm dry skin/flakey skin from pubic hair does not transmit germs to door handles, pc or stationery ? Why is that so? I thought germs were able to travel especially if it's dried skin from the genitals region. How is e coli found on keyboard whereas dry skin from the pubic region does not pose a risk?
Thank you very much!!

Brief Answer:
E. coli is not from dry skins...Maybe people who fail to wash hands!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Germs don't just move around that way. Please, avoid such intrusive thoughts as they would disturb your normal functioning.
In all sincerity, after our many exchanges, I will say you may be suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder. I will recommend you see a psychiatrist to help you with behavioral techniques on coping and maybe drugs if necessary.
I wish you well. Keep me updated!

Instead of dried skin from the pubic region, what if it was dried discharge? Is that harmful? Is that able to survive on door handles? Laptops etc? Will others get sick? If I forgot to wash my hands after it fell on the ground and on top of my exercise book which I then touched my laptop
Thanks again
Thanks again

Germs are not transmitted that way!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
These thoughts are rather disturbing to you. That's not how easily germs move around. Don't get worried about that.

Hi DR,
How are you? I just wanted to know if someone touched a chocolate wrapped with plastic and the plastic happened to have dry discharge, what are the chances of contaminating other inanimate objects which were touched straight after such as pens, stationery, pc, door handles if they didn't wash their hands? How long will those germs survive? So does that mean the next time you handle those objects listed above, you will have 'dry dishcarge germ' hands and contaminate other objects you touch?
Thank you very for your help and understanding
