Can Injury To The Vagus Nerve During Lung Transplant Surgery Be Repaired?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: Can injury to the vagus nerve during lung transplant surgery be repaired. I've developed swallowing, speaking and digestive problems including the formation of a large food ball. I also have pain and stomach cramping and on and off bouts of loose bowels. I've had both upper and lower GI testing and esophagus pressure tested for muscle movement. All test indicate the muscles are not responding appropriately. Is there any treatments available to correct these issues. My quality of life is actually worse than before my lung transplant. These new conditions are actually more debilitating than needing to carry a portable o2 concentrator around to go about my daily life.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthCareMagic.com I am Dr.J XXXXXXX Anto Bruno Mascarenhas, and I am here to help you. I have read your question with care and understand your trouble

There are many surgeries anf techniques to repair damaged nerves

But the outcome depends on the level and extent of injury

If the injury is lower down, you will have better outcome than when the injury is at a higher level
Same way, when the injury is partial you will have better outcome than when the complete nerve has been cut

Hope you found the answer helpful.
