Question: Can (left iliac region hernia) be treated without a surgery?

My dad lives overseas. His CT scan result says: Evidence of left iliac region abdominal wall defect measuring about (5cm) with hernia sac measuring (14x7cm) containing bowel loop and omental fat

Brief Answer:
Only surgery can treat and cure hernia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.
Noted the history about your Father and understood the concerns.

Such a large hernia as you have mentioned can be treated only with surgery, there is no other option.
The sac is very large, contains bowel loops and omental fat hence needs to be operated as early as possible to avoid complications of obstruction.
Although the opening is large enough that is 5 cm it still can cause obstruction that is not allowing the contents to return back to abdominal cavity.

It is better to see that he is medically fit for anesthesia and surgery.

I hope this answers your specific query.

Thank you Dr. Chandrakant. I've forwarded your answer to my dad and he scheduled a surgery after 25 days. He'd like to know if there's anything he should avoid before the surgery (certain types of food, and/or certain body positions), and whether walking for 15-30min a day is recommended. Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your appreciation.
There is no certain food that is to be taken or avoided unless something specific causes any problems like gases, loose stools or hard stools.
To continue normal diet.
Since there is a wait period. it is best to get the Physical examination done by a Physician, undergo investigations for fitness as mentioned above.
I prefer to get the ECG/EKG, X-ray Chest PA view along with routine blood tests and particularly for Sugar, kidney, liver functions with Serum proteins and get corrected if there is anemia, less proteins and so on. Further investigations as the Physician would advise.
Walking is a great exercise, provided it is not casing any problem with hernia.
Also watch for normal bowel movements and no coughing or straining of any sort.

I hope this answer helps your Father.
All the best.
