Can Low Vit D Cause Sperem Count Decrease ?
Question: Dear Doctor, In my 6th month back blood reports, I had low Vitamin D and B12 levels. So as suggested by doctor I took Vitamin D3 tablet once a week for 8 weeks, till October 2021. Now due to my work, I am still not getting adequate sunlight. Can I take one Vitamin D tablet once a month to maintain levels? please suggest. Also I hope taking vit D tablet it won't effect other things like sperm count as i had that issue too. Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Repeat vitamin D blood test
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Vitamin D comes in many doses like 500iu, 1000iu, 2000iu, 60000iu. Low dose like 500 iu can be taken occasionally.
Vitamin D tends to accumulate in body as it is a fat soluble vitamin. It can cause side effects and toxicity if taken unnecessarily. It may cause symptoms like muscle spasm, back pain, kidney stones, kidney damage, etc. Regarding its effect on sperm count, there have been controversial results in research. It cannot be specified whether it is good or bad for sperm count. Therefore a high dose should be taken only if vitamin D is low on blood test. I will suggest that you repeat the test before taking such a high dose.
