Can Newborns Contract Thalassemia From The Parents?

Question: Dear Doctor,
The patient XXXXXXX ( male ) and Diya ( female ) married together and it is nearly 3 years. Diya is 28 years old. Diya is now pregnent for nearly 11 weeks. So, she has done necessary blood and other tests as per local doctor advise.
We came to know that both are having " HETEROZYGOUS STATE OF BETA THALASSEMIA " as enclosed attachment.
Now our local doctor is advising to go for "CVS" test.
Please suggest whether such test is require and if require, is there any best way to do the CVS test and where? will there be any health problem of baby, if we do CVS test.Thanks.

Brief Answer:
It is important, so go for it.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Since you both are carriers of thalassemia (as you say, unable to upload the report), there are 25% chances of thalassemia minor in the baby.
Therefore it is important to get CVS (chorionic villas sampling to rule out thalassemia minor in the baby (25%chance).
It has 3 advantages- Early detection (can be done in the first trimester at 11 weeks), less risk because done with placental sampling, more tissue available in contrast to amniocentesis - only 1%risk associated.
She should continue her pregnancy under supervision.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care

Dr Richa Agarwal, OBGYN
