What happens is sometimes surgeons see the intentions of the patients and if a patient is reluctant from surgery, he may give a statement as you were advised by your surgeon.
It is difficult for patients to see a hernia getting a color change. Symptoms in addition to colour change may be pain and fever or change in bowel habits.
My final suggestion to you is to get it corrected right away. No benefit to keep it like this and wait for it to get strangulated first before going for a surgical correction.
