Can Periods Occur After A Month Of Miscarriage?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Feb 2015
Question: hi Team,

I am 26 years old & I had a second trimester miscarriage at 19 weeks due to cervical incompetence on Dec 17th , 2014. I was hospitalized immediately & proper D & C was done by my gynaec right after that. I had bleeding for next few days followed by spotting which ended around XXXXXXX 4th or so. After that I had sometimes white or yellow discharge . I again started having spotting on 19th Jan' 2015 which turned into a heavy bleeding on 21st Jan'2015 & still continuing. I don't have any pains or severe cramping & no other problems. Should I consider it to be my first period ? Can the periods occur just after a month of miscarriage ? The bleeding is relatively heavier , is it fine to have heavy bleeding ? Can there be any complications associated ? When should I see a doctor as apart from the bleeding, I am not having any other discomfort.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Heavy bleeding is possible in first period after miscarriage

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I understand that you are concerned about heavy bleeding in your first periods after miscarriage.

When you underwent D & C in your 19th week to remove the parts of miscarriage remaining, it is possible that womb ( uterus) lining will be scratched which would have fallen off later and remained in womb.

These small remaining bits ( called products of conception) with endometrium come out during first menstrual cycle. This is the reason first cycle bleeding is heavier than what your periods used to be before pregnancy.

Getting periods after one month of periods is fairly normal and not a matter of concern.

This heavy bleeding will last for two days and becomes lighter next day. Lighter period may continue for next 4 to 5 days which is normal and not a concern. You don't need to see a doctor for this.

There are no other complications associated and hence don't worry.

Only if bleeding is heavier even tomorrow or you change more than 8 (fully soaked) pads today after this, you can consider seeing your doctor. Or else you can resume normal activity and have normal food.

Let me know if you wish any more information.
