Posted on Mon, 6 Feb 2017
Question: I have a rash on back of thighs which I believe is caused by Xaralto which I have taken for over a year due to Afib. I have tried cortisone salve and collodial silver and neither have helped. I am 71 year old female.

Brief Answer:
It can be due to xeralto, stop the drug, review your doc and avoid steroids

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through. Based on the history you have shared, it seems as if the rash is likely a bruise caused by blood thinning caused by xeralto. Your suspicion regarding that is quite right, but the measures like using cortisone or local steroid creams can even worsen the bleeding tendency so these should ideally be avoided.

Kindly get it reviewed by your primary doctor and xeralto should be stopped Meanwhile. Also get complete clotting profile done, alngwith bleeding time and complete blood count to look for other causes of bleeding diathesis. Xeralto, is a blood thinner and though it is more safe and convenient than old conventional blood thinners like warfarin but still risks of bleeding does exist.

Stopping the drug is compulsory to avoid risk of internal bleeding as well. Look for black colored stools or blood contained stools or urine or saliva as in this cases urgent medical interventions to reverse the drug effects may be needed.

Also get yourself fresh EKG if A fib is stil present or settled with medications that you are using. In some cases if it has resolved, temporary stopping the anti coagulation is safe and can be discussed with your primary physician.

Meanwhile cold compresses and avoiding other anti inflammatory drugs is mandatory. Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
