Can Radiation Treatment Cause Permanent Brain Damage And Memory Loss?

Posted on Thu, 28 Sep 2017
Question: I had cancer at the age of 18 and was in my first semester of collage when it started. Anyway I received 4000 rads of cobalt radiation to the site at that time. But about 18 years later I found that I had had several cases of ischemia from the radiation treatments which has affected my memory and I've also have had two bouts of TIA's and or strokes. Do you know of anything that could stop the radiation from continuing to cause damage?

Brief Answer:
Hello. Nothing is there to stop it

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. I have gone through the details. So you must have received whole brain radiation which can cause memory defects as a long term complications. TIA and stroke in thw long run is veey unusual but it can be seen.
However, radiation produces permanent damages to the brain blood vessels which leads to stroke and tia. The effect of radiatiom stops but its aftermath are permanent. Only thing we can offer you is long term antiplatelet agents and hypolipidemic drugs which can provide you some degree of protection against future episodes by providing adequate flow of blood and by inhibiting lipids to acuumulate in already narrowed blood vessels.
Thanks and regards
