Can Severe Chronic Cough Lead To Sleep Apnea?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Feb 2017
Question: For the past year or two, I frequently find myself having a very strong cough as I am taking a bite of food or drinking a liquid. I often end up spitting out my food or drink violently, and the cough will usually persist for a few minutes. People nearby are alarmed at how bad the cough is. I also find that I sometimes snort when I sleep. I don't think I snore, but in the mornings, when I'm half awake, half asleep, I often notice I make a loud, sudden snort. It feels like I might be doing a XXXXXXX version of this when I eat or drink. Like I'm making a small gasp for air and it causes the food/drink to be inhaled too quickly. Is that possible? The other day, I actually noticed myself making a small gasp like this when I wasn't eating or drinking. I wonder if I could be doing it throughout my day without realizing it. (also, I have been coughing much more than normal for about a year, occasionally, so hard it makes me vomit a bit.) I am not a smoker and never have been. Though I am overweight, I do exercise fairly regularly.
