Can Smoking Methamphetamine Lead To Cardiac Arrhythmia?
You helped me before with a similar query and Im somewhat embarrassed to ask you again since I did the exact stupid thing as I did a few weeks ago (smoked meth with a friend) with the same horrible side effects. I have a heart PVC (benign) for which I sometimes take 100 mg metoprolol. This evening I went out with a friend and smoked meth. My heart rhythm feels off . My Omron wrist monitor reads my Bp as 127/93 and my heart rate at 111bpm. I took a Metoprolol about 5 hrs ago before I smoked and I just now took 1 mg of Xanax because i feel anxious. Had about 6 glasses of wine to drink with dinner earlier. Would it be OK to take another metoprolol or more Xanax to steady my heart rhythm or can you suggest another action I can take at home to achieve a regular rhythm. Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome back again on HCM!
I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your situation is triggered by a combination of meth and alcohol.
You should know that alcohol can also trigger cardiac arrhythmia.
I would not recommend taking another metoprolol, as the type of cardiac arrhythmia has not been specified and you are still under the effect of the last tablet you took (it has a long half-life, which means that it is still acting).
Regarding Xanax, I would not recommend taking another tablet, because there is risk of interaction with the alcohol that you have taken earlier (they both increase sedation).
Plenty of water and fluids will also help increase renal filtration and thus the excretion of alcohol and meth metabolites from your body.
If your symptoms are not relieved in the next hours, I recommend going to the ER for a careful physical exam and some tests:
- a resting ECG and cardiac enzymes
- blood electrolytes to exclude a possible electrolyte imbalance.
Hope you will find this answer helpful!
Feel free to ask me again whenever you need!
