Can Taking Carvedilol In Half Lead To Vasovagal Syncope?
Question: I have just recently started taking Carvedilol 6.25 because of what was diagnosed as vassal vagal spells, probably 10 years ago. It will be 3 weeks ago this Tuesday since I started taking the Carvedilol. Today I have felt like I was about to have a vassal vagal every 5 to 10 min. and finally left church to come home. I see my Dr. on Tuesday. I am wondering if I can cut the carvedilol in half of just stop taking it to see if that's the problem. I am 80 years old and in good health. I take cozaar, 50mg once on twice a day, but my BP has not been ashigh since I cut the Estrace in half. I take omeprazole for my stomach and .5 of estrace and 12 omg. of armour thyroid. (I'm allergic ot other kinds of thyroid) Diane

Detailed Answer:
Hello Diane!
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
I passed carefully through your question and would explain that Carvedilol could cause a low heart rate, which can trigger vasovagal syncopes.
Have you checked your heart rate today? What are the values?
If your heart rate is low (below 60 bpm), I would recommend reducing the dose of Carvedilol to half (3.25 mg per day) until consulting with your doctor.
It is also necessary avoiding physical activity and have some rest in the next days, to avoid possible falling.
Increasing salt intake in your diet and take plenty of fluids will help too.
Hope you will find this answer helpful!
Kind regards,
Dr. Iliri
