default
Posted on Wed, 22 Apr 2015
Question: HaD colon resection 25 years ago.....diarearra most of the time but control with Imodum. A friend is demanding that I take Magnesium and I feel that it will make my diarra much worse. What can I tell her to get her to stop on the magnesium? Also I have CIDP and she tells me that Magnesium will stop my CIDP rather than the IVIG which I get every 4 weeks.

Brief Answer:
your treatment is right direction. Check blood Magnesium

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, thanks for choosing HCM. I share your concerns. Imodium is right medicine for diarrhoea in your case. Magnesium, as you have said, may aggravate your diarrhoea as it acts as laxative. Your friend's concerns are true as chronic diarrhoea leads to magnesium deficiency. But if you do not have symptoms like fatigue, weakness, muscle cramps, anxiety, reduced memory power, high blood pressure, high blood sugar , you don't need to take magnesium supplements. If you have symptoms, go for blood magnesium levels before starting magnesium. If it is low, visit a gastroenterlogist before you start magnesium. Else You can thank your friend for his valuable advise and tell him that you don't have magnesium deficiency, so don't need magnesium supplements.

Coming to CIDP, magnesium will not cure or help in CIDP. IVIg and corticosteroids are required for CIDP. You can convey this to your friend.

So , treatment you are taking is correct, you don't require to modify it. However whenever you feel like changing it , always visit an expert, as you had undergone major surgery.

I hope my reply will benefit you. Please write to HCM or me for follow up queries. I wish you good health. Thank you.
