Can Uncorrected Thyroid Hormones Alter Blood Glucose Levels?
Question: I am diadnosed with reactive hyperinsulinemia and eating a very low carb diet. I have battled this since 2002. I am constantly getting huge attacks of adrenaline, tinnitus,
and panic attacks. When I eat anything, my sugar rapidly drops until I get a huge adrenaline attack. I am about to stop eating at all. I have tried proglycem but my sugar barely rises then falls. I quit smoking, and suspect oxycodone is making it worse, so I am almost off of it and going to see if things improve. I do not have high blood pressure. I have Graves disease treated with radioactive iodine, so now thyroid hormones are low. I take levythyroxine (sp?). In the morning my blood sugar is elevated and I am shaking, sweating, migraine, panic, insomnia. I can't seem to get a handle on it. Two endocrine doctors did not help at all, they just look at the blood sugar level and if its not low then they blow you off-they don't understand that I am running intense adrenaline and that is why its not showing hypoglycemia. Something is very wrong and I don't know what to do.

I have lowest glucose at 53, at night I get adrenaline and at around 5:00am I see it at 126,so by the time I get up I probably stimulated alot of insulin. exactly-I do go to carbs when I'm distressed to try to fix the problem. My thyroid is still sluggish and not yet in the correct range for TSH.I don't know cortisone levels. thank you!

Brief Answer:
Synacten stimulation test needed;
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
As you may know, uncorrected thyroid hormones may alter blood glucose.
I do not think it is reactive hypoglycemia as it occurs at during the night and in these cases, organic causes should be excluded.
A synacten stimulation test is also suggested in these cases.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you-I called my primary doctor to ask him to order synacthen test. He probably won't get back to me until next week. Should I get back with you after that is done? Last night was horrible-all night kept shooting my blood sugar up with adrenaline surges and it seems to want to be at 126 so I am thinking I have insulin resistance?? My chest was so tight and constricted I felt like I was having a heart attack! Can you order something for the anxiety? This is unbearable! Thanks so much.

Brief Answer:
You may try Xanax;
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Yes, of course, feel free to attach/upload the results of the Synacten stimulation test here only.
Please let me know the report of the thyroid hormone results to decide further suggestions regarding Levothyroxine and its dosage.
I do not know if you can take anxiolytics in your country without a prescription but if you're my patient, I would suggest using Xanax 0.25mg, 1tab in the evening (please discuss with your primary about this).
Hope I have answered your query.
