Posted on Thu, 2 Jun 2016
Question: Dear doctor,
Query regarding hypothyroidism and vitamin d deficiency:
I had a miscarriage last Feb due to blighted ovum at 8 weeks (only gestational sac seen n ultrasound).
I have tsh 13 now one year back it was 7 and I took thyroxine 25mg but I stopped having the tablet after becoming normal, but I didn't know that I was not supposed to stop the medicine even after becoming normal level..
After conceiving only I again took thyroid test and it became tsh 13 from 7
now taking thyroxine50mcg (now only started taking thyroxine after d&c)
My gynaecologist told me to increase the dosage of thyroxine from 25mg to 50mg..am taking thyronorm 50mcg now from Abbott pharmaceuticals..is that the right medicine ???

i have attached the tablet pic.
please advice.

I have also vitamin d deficiency and I have read that it causes ovulation disorder after that i started taking a vitamin D supplement advicedby a doctor and the same month I ovulated and conceived...I have missed that vitamin d prescription because I shifted to a new place..can u suggest a vitamin d tabletwhich helps to ovulate..
Can I continue vitamin d and thyroid tablet even after conceiving???
Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
Continue the thyronorm 50 mcg till TSH is less than 2.5IU/mll

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Welcome to HCM,

Since your TSH levels are very high you will need to take 50 mcg of thyronorm as advised to you by your doctor. If after 3 months your repeat TSH levels are still high then you will have to increase the dose.

The target of TSH levels varies, with values of less than 4.5 IU being normal non pregnant women. During pregnancy the value of TSH has to be even less 2.5 IU. So please do take the thyronorm regularly and get TSH checked to ensure it reaches normal levels and continue taking thyronorm after that as well.

It was a lucky coincidence that you conceived in the same month as taking the vitamin D, you need to get your serum vitamin D levels done, and take oral supplements only if vitamin D levels are below the normal level of 30.

Do not take excess vitamin D, as vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and it can accumulate in the body and cause problems.

Take Folic acid 5 mg as well when trying to conceive and see a Gynaecologist immediately as soon as you miss your period.

Hope this helps.
Regards
