Can Vitamins Be Taken When Treating Thrombocythemia?
Question: My husband has thrombocythemia and was treated with hydroxyurea. Is it safe for him to take vitamins such as the b vitamins ( he is also taking Metformin for diabetes) and omeaga oil? He has had a couple of bleeding episodes in the past year.
Brief Answer:
Vitamin safe. Check with his doctor about omega 3
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
I appreciate your concern for your husband.
There is no harm in taking vitamins as there is no contraindications. No interaction with metformin also. Omega 3 fatty acids decrease the platelets stickiness like aspirin and may increase the bleeding tendency. Please check with your husband's doctor the risk of bleeding now and his direction on whether omega 3 can be used.
Take care,
Dr Noble Zachariah
