Can You Get Rabies From Touching Things In The Garden If A Rabid Animal Was Feeding From It?

Question: I recently picked a tomatoe from my garden and touched a large bite mark that was in it. I had a paper cut in my finger at the time. I had seen a groundhog in the yard on a few occasions this summer and I’m assuming that’s what was eating my garden. Could I have a rabies exposure?

Brief Answer:
You can get rabies
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I read your query and here is my advice.
You can get rabies if you get bitten by the wild animals or if animals saliva get in the wound . In theory if saliva remaining in the tomato gets in the wound you can get rabies but practically it is a bit difficult .
So if a rabid animal has left saliva in the vegetables and you touch them with a your hand which has an wound you can get rabies.
Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks.

Do you suggest seeking medical assistance and do you think I need rabies shots?
Brief Answer:
It depends on the type of wound
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. If your wound was just like a paper cut there is no need for rabies shot. If you have an open wound and you touched the wound with the bitten tomato you may need to seek medical attention for rabies shot.
