Can You Please Explain The Effects And Side Effects Of That Medication Neobladder ?
Question: My brother had neobladder surgery on March 26th. His doctor prescribed him sodium bicarbonate for 6 months period. Can you please explain the effects and side effects of that medication. Is he need to follow any diet restrictions or precautions. Any blood work to be done for monitoring.
Brief Answer:
Usually quite safe
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Sodium bicarbonate in the usual doses is quite safe. However, sometimes, particularly if the patient is having cardiac or kidney conditions and, can lead to cardiac failure or fluid retention.
We need to keep an eye on any swelling of feet or face, shortness of breath, palpitations, etc and also check serum sodium, and bicarbonate levels periodically. Salt intake should be cut down.
Hope this helps.

He is discharged from hospital and he is at home. Yesterday he had giddiness and profuse sweating but his blood sugar and BP was normal. Samething happened when he was in the hospital and he was unconscious for 1 to 2 mins and he back to consciousness by himself. Is he need to be followed up for anything. Thank you
Brief Answer:
May need to evaluate further
Detailed Answer:
please discuss with his doc regarding this issue. May need further tests like CT brain, holter monitoring, etc. This doesn't seem related to his bladder cancer.
