Can You Prescribe Fosamax For Severe Osteoporosis ?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Dec 2024
Question: Hi, my mom has severe osteoporosis. Can you prescribe her fosamax? Also she is taking furosemide due to severe lymphedema, but it doesn't seem to be working. Do you have any other recommendations like maybe a lymphedema machine? We tried diuretics and bandages but her legs are still very swollen. She is also taking clindamycin since she keeps getting frequent infections. Thank you!

Please see the detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for the query. I can understand your concern. According to your statement, your mother has been suffering from severe osteoporosis and lymphedema.

Fosamax contains alendronic acid that is used in the treatment of osteoporosis and paget's disease of bone. But, bone density test, serum calcium, vitamin D3 assay should be done before starting treatment with alendronic acid. Without assessing a patient physically, it is not recommended to suggest alendronic acid to a patient. Because, a physician's supervision is necessary during taking this medication as it has some serious side effects.

After checking her blood pressure, Spironolactone can be added to her current medication, Furosemide for subsiding her lymphedema. Keep her legs elevated during lying position. Encourage her to walk some distance regularly. Avoid any type of salt containing foods to her.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
