Child Has Green Phlegm And Runny Nose. No Relief With Flumicil And Mucosolvan. Antibiotics Advisable?
Question: My son, age 4 has stubborn phglem for almost 2 months and runny nose for abt a week. But no other symtoms.Medication such as Flumicil and mucosolvan doesn't seem to help. Will anotibiotics be advisable at this point? The phglem was greenish in color and has now turned to light green.
Hi Dear,
Your child has probably developed chronic bronchitis. It seems like sputum is now infected. If possible, your son should go for sputum culture. If culture is positive, then we can use the relevant antibiotic according to the culture report to clear the infection.
Investigations like Chest x-ray, CBC, ESR, Mantoux test to be done to rule out any chronic infection like Tuberculosis etc.
Meawhile continue the Expectorant syrups. Steam inhalation regularly will of much help.
Please feel free to ask for more clarification.
Thanks
