Could Percocet Be Causing The Itching That Is Experienced An Hour After Taking It?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Dec 2019
Question: I just asked a question about my 20 year old daughter who had her tonsils out yesterday. She is taking Amoxicillin, and has been experiencing extreme itchiness. However, I just realized that the itching seems to really kick in an hour after I give her a dose of Percocet. Could that be the culprit? She’s had Amoxicillin before with no reaction. I am giving her cetirazine, because Benadryl makes her agitated. Please advise the best course of action.

Brief Answer:
Stop Percocet and as advised further

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about your 20 year old daughter and understood the concerns.
Your observation is correct.
Percocet contains Oxycodone and Acetaminophen and are known to give itching as side effects.
Hence stop giving Percocet.
Continue Cetirizine.
Since She has taken Amoxicillin in past without any reaction and since there is no rash it can be continued.
But since she has been operated for removal of tonsils I would advise to consult your Doctor/s before giving further dosages of Amoxicillin.

Also try to recollect which other medications like Cefixime/antibiotics, Ibuprofen/other anti-inflammatory medications with painkiller properties suit her as an alternative which can be changed over.

I hope this answer helps you in decision making.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Wishing your daughter an early and complete recovery.

With Regards.
