Posted on Thu, 29 Aug 2024
Question: Started a very strange light period about ten days ago. It was very on and off. Started to pick up a bit by day 6 then seemed to fade (very light flow), Starting tonight my flow has gotten heavy like my normal period. I have never had such a flow and my period has never gone over 6 days. Prior to this period I missed my period in August, in September I had my period for a day. October was normal timing but lighter than usual, I was two weeks late in November. I am currently 46 years old will be 47 in March.

I have a dr appointment on Monday for ultrasound. Is it ok to wait until Monday (no sooner appointment). Should I be overly concerned about bleeding for so long.

Brief Answer:
It could be due to hormonal imbalance

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
I have gone through your history and understand your concerns.
As per your description these symptoms could be due to hormonal imbalance. ( perimenopausal stage)
But as you are having irregular period it could be an anovulatory cycle.
Get your pelvic ultrasound to see the endometrial thickness and other causes of your symptoms.
Get your thyroid profile and hemoglobin test also.
For prolonged bleeding you can use medication.
you have to take high protein diet and lots of vegetables and fruits, you can take iron and calcium supplements.
It is normal at your age to bleed like this due to hormonal changes because of your age,no need to worry about it.
Hope found useful, feel free to ask more information.
Good luck

Are these stop and start, change of flow periods typical of anovulation. Can it seem like your period is never ending? How can I stop the flow?

Brief Answer:
It could be due to hormonal imbalance

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Sorry for the delay in my response.
These flow changes could be due to hormonal imbalance at your age ,could be anovulatory cycle.
No it is not like that ,it will stop in 6months to one year in some cases for 3-4 yrs before achieving complete menopausal stage.
You can take the medicine and hormonal therapy for the same.
