Could You Recommend Another Type Of Anti-anxiety Medication When Valium And Xanax Lead To Disturbing Visual Effects?
Benzodiazepines are a better alternative
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I understand your concern. Provided your doctor has not given you a reason for this decision, I can only assume that they have decided to cut you off due to the fact that there are better, more effective alternatives to Meprobamate, such as Benzodiazepines and also because one of the serious side effects of this drug is liver damage.
Assuming your doctor did not replace your medication with a better alternative, if you think you absolutely need it, you can either talk to your doctor about an alternative drug, as suggested above, or see another doctor who will be willing to continue your prescription.
I hope this answers your question. If you have further questions, feel free to ask.
Take care.
Alternative anti anxiety medication
Detailed Answer:
I understand you are not comfortable with using Benzodiazepines and, as a doctor, I try to limit their prescription as much as I can.
Yes, there are several other drugs which can help to efficiently manage anxiety. These drugs are mainly used to treat other conditions but have been shown to be quite effective in treating anxiety.
Antidepressants such as Fluoxetine (Prozac), Venlafaxine (Effexor), Amitriptylin, Doxepin, Imipramine are commonly used.
Also antipsychotics such as Aripiprazole (Abilify), antihistamines (Hydroxyzine/Vistaril), beta blockers, which are drugs mainly used to control the heart and blood pressure (Propranolol) and also anticonvulsants such as gabapentin (Neurontin).
Personally I prefer to prescribe to my patients antihistamines and beta blockers, because these are the least likely to give side effects. However, your doctor, who knows your medical history is the one to decide which of the above drugs would work best for you.
I hope this helps. I would be happy to answer any futher questions you might have.
Wishing you good health and all the best.
