Question: DIABETOLOGIST - Dear Doctor I set my foot in 80 a few days back. I have had Type II diabetes (NDDM) from 2012.I have been taking 500 mg Glycomet SR twice a day. I walk for 4 km every day and am careful in my diet barring a few munchings now and then. All these years my fasting glucose levels did not cross 120 and post lunch levels did not cross 150.But recently i observed that my fasting level is around 129 and my pp level is around 160 to 180.
I tested with one touch ultra glucometer for 3 consecutive days and the levels of pp are 169, 188, and 160 and fasting levels 129,126,128.The lab test result is - fasting 125 and pp is 165.
I would like to know has the time come to take additional medicine to control the diabetes. In fact , is my diabetes under control or does it require some repair?.Kindly suggest a safe and mild additional dose. Can i take gliptin in addition to glycomet 500 mg sr ? Is it safe. if so what mg do i have to take?

Brief Answer:
you do not need additional medicine, your diabetes is under control

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

I have read your query and understand your health concern.

Both your fasting and post prandial blood sugar levels are well within normal range. The lab test result is also normal.

You do not need additional medicine to control your Diabetes. I would suggest you to continue taking 500 mg Glycomet SR twice a day. Your Diabetes is under control, it does not require any repair. Continue with your daily walking, and diet maintainence.

There is no need to add gliptin to your current medicine regimen. You are on the right track in controlling your Diabetes. Follow the same regimen that you are doing currently. Repeat your fasting and post prandial blood sugar testing every 3 months. That should suffice.

Hope this answers your query. Let me know about your follow up queries, if any.

Kind regards,
Dr Shanthi E
