Dear Doctor, I Had Contacted You 4-5 Days Back When

I had contacted you 4-5 days back when my daughter was having loose motions and stomach ache. Here is the old question and your reply for your reference.
===============================
My daughter is 3 years old. She is complaining of stomach ache today and she has done potty seven times today. Though the stool is not loose but, every time she has complained for stomach ache, she has gone for potty.
Just to update that now the motions have converted into loose motions.
What shall we do in this scenario now and what should be the dietary precautions which we should take? We stay in XXXXXXX region and it is cold here (for your information).
Brief Answer:
ORS is the mainstay of treatment
Detailed Answer:
I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Most often children suffer from viral infections which make them pass loose watery stools. The green colour occurs due to rapid transit through large intestine where the bile pigments do not get adequate time to convert to the yellow colour of stool. The cause does not need to be treated and is self limiting. It is a very bad practice to give antibiotics in such cases and I would insist you to refrain from it unless the stool is blood stained. You can give Rantac but it is rather optional. However, the lost water and salts need to be replenished. ORS (oral rehydration solution) is the mainstay of treatment and needs to be given. A home based alternative would be to mix six (6) level teaspoons of Sugar, Half (1/2) level teaspoon of Salt, One Litre of clean drinking water i.e. 5 cupfuls (each cup about 200 ml.) and to give it sip by sip. If the child is otherwise active and playful you need not worry.
Also give curd or yogurt since it contains plenty of beneficial bacteria and should help. Tomorrow you can fetch and give zinc supplements like Zinconia Syr 10 ml once daily for the next 10 days. You need not worry. It should gradually return back to normal.
==================================
We had visited pediatrician on 19th Dec when my daughter was having Cough, cold, Vomiting and loose motions and the doctor has given the following medicines:
- Enterogermina : once a day for 5 days
- Z&D drops - 1ml once a day for 14 days
- Syn Mucaine gel : 5 ml 3 times a day before meals
- Syp XYZal - 5 ml once a day for 5 days
Today is 5th day. Most of the medicines will be finished today. She is better now but, loose motions are still not under control. Its a bit better but, still she is going for potty 7-8 times daily and sometimes it is loose and green and sometimes it is close to normal. There is no blood in stools. What shall we do now?
Shall we again visit the doctor or shall we continue medicines for few more days? Main issue now is loose motions. Please suggest.
I am attaching the prescription for your reference. Please suggest dietary precautions as well.
Regards,
Ankur

No need to worry. Just continue ORS. Continue Z&D
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back once again. I have checked your query in detail. I would insist you not to panic about the ongoing stool frequency. Continue giving ORS till the problem resolves. Continuye Z&D drops for 10 days from the onset. Enterogermina is optional and may be continued for a few more days. I do not think that anything else needs to be done. Do not worry. It will resolve soon.

Thanks for your reply.
She doesn't take ORS as she is not liking the taste of it.
Hence, we are mainly giving her plain lukewarm water (as it is very cold in Delhi). We will continue Z&D as suggested.
Sometimes she says that she wants to go to potty but, she just passes gas as she is not able to differentiate between potty and gas.
- Shall we do something about gas?
- Any other alternate for ORS as she is not taking ORS.
- We are mainly giving her khichdi, banana, dal and rice. Any other thing you want to suggest for her diet? We are not giving her milk as of now as suggested by the doctor.

Ankur

Fluid intake and good food is necessary
Detailed Answer:
Sorry for the inadvertent delay in responding. Giving lukewarm water is good but not enough. The salt lost need to be substituted. There are various flavoured forms of ORS (some of which are available in tetra packs) available and you can try those if there is an issue with taste.
By gas, if you are mentioning about flatulence, you need not worry about it. If you mean dyspepsia or digestion problems, give it some time and it will resolve soon. Please continue khichdi and all other things in diet. You can hold off milk and fruit juice (whole fruits can be given) for the time being. All other things can be given. No specific addition suggested.

My daughter is better now but, motion frequency is 4-5 times a day though motion is not loose now and sometimes she complains about stomach ache.
- Shall we continue ORS for few more days?
- Anything else we shall do for stomach ache?
- We have heard about "Nutrolin B" syrup is good for stomach. Shall we give it to her? If yes, please suggest the dosage for the same.
