Dear Doctor I Have A 6 Month Old Baby Girl

Question: Dear Doctor
I have a 6 month old baby girl and we have introduced solids to her, Purée foods.
I noticed she puts in a lot of effort to poop and sometimes the poop is very hard.
Is this normal?
Or can I assist her and try to make the stools more soft so it is easier for her to pass stools.
In addition she only has 100-150 ml of milk from 8am to 6pm. Is this ok or should she be having more milk?
Thanks you.
Kind regards

Brief Answer:
Infantile constipatoin suggestions
Detailed Answer:
Hello... I understand your concern.
Please be rest assured that this is a completely physiological issue and nothing related to constipation at all.
Babies of this age until 6 months of age (either breastfeed or formula fed) usually how some discrepancies in the bowel movements.
They can pass motion 10 times per day or 10 days once also.
As long as the baby is feeding well, urinating at least 4 times per day, is active otherwise and smiling - you need not worry at all about this particular pattern of stools.
You need to worry only when there are symptoms like -
1. Not passed motion consistently for 10 days.
2. Abdomen is distended and tight.
3. Vomiting consistently or green colored or bilious vomiting.
4. Not passing flatus for 7 to 10 days.
5. Refusal of feeds.
6. Decrease urine output and the baby not being active.
Suggestions:
1. Natural methods are the best to relieve constipation.
2. Constipation is a risk factor for UTI
3. Maximum milk consumption per day should not exceed 300-400ml
4. Minimum 3-4 cups of fruits and vegetables to be consumed per day. Papaya is the best natural laxative.
