Question: Dear Doctor!
I have a couple questions.
It started a couple years ago, when I noticed I got very "weezing" when physically active like running etc. Thought it was asthma, but no medicine helped. Following years it got worse, and I started feeling a lump in the throat. Checked it out, and the doctor said there were clear signs of acid in my throat. I do not have heartbrun though, so he talked about maybe beeing silent reflux. Now. My throat gets tight when speaking hard, inging, sneexing, running, smoking much etc. If I just shout ONCE, it tightens.
It is located around my XXXXXXX apple.
But also the muscles around the area tightens to the point of pain.
1: Can this breathing problems (mainly breathing in - - but sometimes a little out as well) be due to silent reflux?
2: I have some complications with heart arrythmia. Is there any reflux medicine that DOESNT affect that?
thanks!

Brief Answer:
Have you had Holter monitoring?

Detailed Answer:
Hi Kaj.gatebil,

I am not an ENT doctor, but a general surgeon, and I feel this may be a more relevant speciality than ENT, so I hope you are OK with me throwing in my two cents.

1. It can be caused by silent reflux. Reflux is typically present when laying down, and may be exacerbated by smoking, drinking, or eating spicy and smoked food. Physical activity may also provoke it. A gastroscopy is necessary to diagnose it, but a proton pump inhibitor may be initiated; if it works, it suggests reflux.

2. Have you had Holter monitoring for your heart arrhythmia? It is relevant to know if your reflux symptoms coincide with bouts of arrhythmia, this can be down by a Holter monitoring and a diary where you note when you have reflux symptoms. The medications can be suggested based on this findings.

Hope this helps.
Please feel free to discuss further.

Brief Answer:
Any association between arrhythmias and reflux?

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

Has it been assessed if there is an association between the occurrence of arrhythmias and reflux events? I ask because some arrhythmias can cause symptoms usually not ascribed to cardiac disease.

In any case, I suggest you have a gastroscopy (if not done already). If this is inconclusive, then a bronchoscopy could be the next definitive move.

Hope this helps.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
