Dear Doctor, My One And A Half Month Girl Baby's
Question: Dear doctor, My one and a half month girl baby's birth weight was 2.4 kg on 6th aug and in next one week the baby reduced weight and became 2.140 kg . Then she started gaining weight. Baby is drinking expressed breast milk. Baby was initially drinking 30 ml every 2 hours. Now baby is taking around 60 to 80 ml every 2 hours. Baby is taking roughly 600 ml in 24 hrs. Now today on 28th sep. Baby weight was 4 kg. We are worried whether this weight is high or is this normal. Also is it normal for the baby to take 600 ml breast milk in 24 hrs. We are worried whether the baby is putting too much weight. Please advise us on this. Thanks.
Brief Answer:
You need not worry as the baby is only on breastfeeds
Detailed Answer:
Hello... I understand your concern but please be informed that breast milk of the mother is specific for the baby and you need not worry about the weight gain as long as the baby is only on breast milk either expressed or direct.
As the baby grows there will be developmental milestones which she will be achieving and that will be expensed as energy expenditure and she will become normal.
You need not worry about this.

Dear doctor, from which month can we give foods other than breast milk to baby. what foods can we start giving to the baby. thanks.
Brief Answer:
Suggestions on complementary feeding
Detailed Answer:
Hello... you can be starting complementary feeding starting from 6 months of age please.
At this age you can start giving Cerelac stage one rice or Nestum rice stage 1 etc. All are same in calories and energy. Only thing is palatability which is subjective for each kid.
Other home-made food options will be -
1. Daal and rice well cooked and made into a porridge along with ghee
2. Boiled apple or banana and mashed into a paste.
3. Any made cereal porridge preparation with additional ghee added.
Remember certain principles like -
1. Add one food material / cereal or fruit per week. This will be useful because if he develops vomiting or diarrhoea, we will know what to avoid.
2. Add vegetables and fruits made into a paste surely to avoid constipation.
3. Do not add too much sugar as it may cause diarrhoea.
