Question: Dear doctor, My one and half month old baby have dry scalp it looks like white scales looks like dandruff.we consulted a paediatric dermatologist in CMC Vellore. The doctor prescribed salicylic acid to applied on scalp in night twice a week for two weeks and ketacanazole Shampoo to be used once in a week. Today we applied salicylic acid in the scalp. We don't know whether it has to be left in the scalp or has to be washed later. Please advice us as how to use salicylic acid in the scalp. After applying salicylic acid, how long it has to be left in the scalp and when should it be washed. And also please advice us as how to use ketacanazole Shampoo. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

Salicylic acid is not to be used in babies. It is not advisable. Moreover, ketoconazole too is not recommended for use in infants and kids. For dandruff, I suggest you to use cetrilak mild (5% cetrimide) for head wash. In addition to that I suggest you to use desonide 0.05% lotion (desowen lotion) on the scalp for overnight application.
