Dengue Fever For 5 Days, Dr Adviced For Blood Transfusion. Is He Critical ?
Question: my brother has been diagnosed with dangue fever for last five days and his some p-counts are 0000 , doctor advised for blood donation to him , is he in danger situation ?

Dengue Fever is a viral illness transmitted via mosquito (Aedes) bite. A severe form of the disease known as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) presents with increased bleeding tendency due to decreased platelet count.
Symptoms of Dengue:
1. High grade fever, with accompanying chills, headache and eye ache.
2. Bone pain and joint aches
3. Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, cold
4. Skin rash
Your doctor would mostly ask for one or more of the following investigations.
1. Complete blood count especially Platelet count
2. Serum Electrolytes and Liver function tests (esp. in DHF)
3. Viral antibody detection by ELISA
Treatment and Prognosis of Dengue:
Like most other viral illnesses, Dengue runs its course and fades off with minimal supportive treatment like antipyretic, anti-cold and fluid replacement therapy.
"Hospitalization is required if DHF is detected (Platelet count <1.5 lakh/cu mm)". Treatment includes i.v fluids, transfusion of platelet concentrate, correcting the electrolyte abnormalities etc.
The convalescence period is directly related to the pre-morbid immunity of the affected individual. "Convalescence is especially prolonged in DHF with complaints of weakness".
