Diabetic. Blood Test Shows HBA1c-12.17%, Blood Sugar Fasting-223 And Blood Sugar PP-211. Suggestions?
i am 33 yrs old. just had my blood tested & results with me. i am diabetic for past 4 yrs with poor control / medication for last 2 yrs. And am an alcoholic for the past few years (chronic). I have stopped in take totally since last 15 days and on diabetic medication (Tabs) before & after meal. Also i am using Avas 10 for last 14 days to control cholestrol (this was prescribed by doctor 4 yrs back - right now i am using without prescription )
The results of check up as:
HBA1c - 12.17%
Blood sugar Fasting - 223
Blood Sugar PP 211
Kidney Function Test:
Urea 19 mg%
Creatinine 1.0 mg%
Uric Acid 5.13 mg%
Lipid Profile:
Total Cholesterol 129 mg%
Triglycerides 109 mg%
HDL 33 mg%
LDL 74 mg%
VLDL 22 mg%
Liver Function Tests
Bilirubin(Total) 0.7 mg%
Bilirubin (Direct) 0.2 mg/dL
Alkaline Phosphatase 38 U/L
SGOT (AST) 39 U/L
SGPT (ALAT) 138 U/L
Total Proteins 7.2 gm%
Serum Albumin 4.6 gm%
Globulin 2.6 gm%
A/g Ratio 1.8:1
i can see that the values of SGOT (AST) AND SGPT (ALAT) are abnormally high. Am i having a liver failure or damage? I had experienced mild pain on my right side just below my chest when i have been consuming alcohol. But have not felt the pain for last 12 days. But today i am feeling a mild pain again. Is this a symptom of liver damange. Pls advice. Is there a chance for me to save my liver or am i totally Lost?

Regarding liver function test.
The SGOT and SGPT should be maintained around 40 U/L.
SGPT is raised and it is specific to liver.
So there is liver injury. This is due to Alcohol induced hepatitis.
You need to stop alcohol to reverse the liver damage and to control your blood sugar.
Alcohol causes hyperglycemia due to release of sugars from like.
You may need an Ultrasound of the Abdomen to rule out Fatty liver or Alcohol Chorosis.
Consult a Gastroenterologist.
Regarding you Diabetes.
In such young age you have uncontrolled diabetes.
This will lead to damage of vital organs like kidney, eye and heart.
Alcoholism will not help in controlling the sugars.
Take control of your diabetes by
1. Diet
2. Exercise and
3. Regular medications.

The liver damage is not very bad.
It is reversible it the offending thing(Alcohol) is stopped.
It is not fatal.
You may take medication in consultation with the Gastroenterologist.
Don't be scared. Be hopeful and have a strong determination to stop alcohol.
