please suggest what diet he should take to increase hemoglobin count, he takes insulin before meals, and blood pressure tablets too, recently his reports show potassium level is high.

Hemoglobin of 6.5 gms/dl is classified as severe anemia.
It is very important to treat anemia in diabetic because it aggravates diabetic complications like retinopathy. The patient is more prone for heart disease and stroke.
The treatment depends upon the cause of the anemia.
In longstanding diabetic it is due mostly due to kidney disease. Due to this there is a deficiency of erythropoietin which helps in the production of RBC's.
In this case erythropoietin injection is needed.
Secondly blood transfusion is needed. Especially packed cells.
1 unit of packed help to increase the Hemoglobin by 1 g/gl.
Once the hemoglobin reaches 8 gms/dl then the doctors will prescribe iron and vitamin B 12 supplements to improve it further.
A hemoglobin value of above 11 g/dl is desirable in indian meal.
The iron XXXXXXX foods that can be taken by diabetes are green leafy vegetables, beans, lentils, chick peas and soy bean.
Control of blood pressure and potassium levels will prevent the kidney damage.

Anemia is due to renal disease. In my opinion erythropoietin may has be needed.
Secondly if the hemoglobin is fall such drastically in an elderly patient XXXXXXX blood loss due cancer has also need to be rule out.
Request your doctor to test for occult blood in the stool.
